Almost all of our students have entered the 4th grade without knowing their basic multiplication facts. Multiplication is a foundational skill that students need to master in order to progress in their learning in this grade level and beyond. Our students respond very well to game-based learning, and we want to create an environment where learning is not only fun, but also encourages students to build their teamwork skills. Currently, we only have access to a limited number of multiplication activities that are truly engaging for our diverse learners.
Mastering a skill like multiplication also boosts students' confidence in themselves and leads to more engaged learners. Many of our students have struggled with the transition back to in-person learning after having spent last year in distance learning. We want to provide our students with resources that will build their teamwork and collaboration skills as well as their math skills. The products we have chosen will help us to set up math centers in each of our classrooms so that students can work in teams to build fluency in their multiplication skills as well as to learn how to work in teams toward a common goal.
We have seen first hand how are students have begun to grow on their journey to mastery. With these items, we can help our students truly excel, this year and in future years. We are seeking to specifically address grade-level deficits in 4.NBT.B.5. This standard will be built on in subsequent standards in this and other grades, so we urgently want to address the academic needs of our learners while at the same time addressing their socio-emotional needs.
