Since the pandemic, students need to feel safe, learn how to handle their emotions, and know that they always have a home away from home. For some of my students the safest they feel is at school. I am always there for them to help them feel safe in a big world.
Having a welcoming calm down center in our classroom will help my students succeed in learning about their emotions and feelings as well and controlling them. They will have a private area to decompress and chose objects to help them settle down and focus on calming.
Students will be able to go to the calming corner for some privacy in the house cube. They can choose a calm fidget toy, relax to soothing sounds from the white noise machine, and meditate with a cuddly meditation elephant. These will help take their mind off of overwhelming feelings and learn to breath through hard moments. When students are calm and ready on the inside, they will be able to focus in class and work to the best of their abilities. A flip book of emotions will also be in the center to help them identify their feelings.
This will help students with Nevada standards;
1.PK.1a Make independent choices from diverse interest centers or activities.
1.PK.1b Select materials to use for individual expression.
1.PK.3 Re-engage in a task or activity after experiencing disappointment, frustration, or failure.
3.PK.1 Identify a range of feelings (e.g., sadness, anger, fear, and happiness)
3.PK.2a Express feelings, needs or wants in appropriate ways.
