The vast majority of students that I work with are several grade-levels behind academically. The most recent MAP assessment indicated that my average student currently is at a 4th grade learning level. The calculators are being utilized to complete a classroom set such that I can continue to assist students with learning grade-level content, without penalizing them for not having mastered arithmetic, yet. The hand sanitizer and masks are needed such as to keep up with COVID protocols and ensuring the safety of our students. Additionally, our students are persistently underprepared with respect to learning materials given the low socioeconomics of the student population our school serves.
In addition to further setting back my students with respect to their learning, COVID also ravaged the community at large as many of our students' families experienced higher levels of death and furthered the economic strain on households.
This is particularly concerning to me because the school is one of the original schools in the Las Vegas valley and dilapidated. Many of the classrooms are unwelcoming and none of them have windows; the rooms are generally depressing. Coupling this aspect with the undesirable living conditions of many of my students' families, there is genuine concern that there are little morsels of happiness and comfort within these students' lives. The speaker and lights will be used to create an inviting and engaging learning environment in which the students are eager to participate in.
