Students struggle in math, for many reasons. Mainly, they find it boring. They don't understand how it is related to real life. If they are absent from classes, they quickly fall behind because math builds upon itself. English language learners and special education struggle with traditional pen and paper lectures. Gifted and talented students are ready to move beyond everyone else. The lack of basic learning items like pens, pencils, and paper, makes it difficult for students to engage in learning not to mention math tools that go beyond the basics, like rulers, compasses, protractors, and inclinometers.
When students have not only the essential tools for learning but the specific tools and resources for learning math; students will start understanding the purpose of math and will become more engaged math learners. These tools will allow me and my students to take learning beyond pen and paper learning and beyond learning within the walls of the classroom. With enough supplies for all my students, they are able to take supplies home to participate in projects they might have missed. I will be able to integrate learning strategies and modifications, like color coding and vocabulary notebooks, so my ELL and my special education. I can give extension projects to students who are more advanced.
Furthermore, by recording classes, students who miss a lesson, no longer fall behind. They can watch the lesson, and then get further assistance as needed. If they are absent for an extended period of time due to covid, they can still participate in the lesson every day. In conclusion, with the proper tools and technology, not just the essentials, all students whether at home or in school can use hands-on projects to understand math and how it applies to real-life situations.
