Many of the students I work with have difficulties with communicating effectively in the classroom. Enhancing their communication skills (whether it be speech sounds, grammar, social skills, etc.) is more effective when students are able to access fun materials. Books are a great way to enhance grammar, vocabulary, and language comprehension skills. Using manipulatives with books allows the students to participate in the story and promotes a fun learning environment! Additionally, books and manipulatives are great resources to use when participating in distance education, since they can be easily displayed using the ELMO.
Using toys and books are great ways to motivate students with eliciting speech sounds and increase phonemic awareness, too! Being able to play and engage with materials makes learning fun, and encourages the students to actively participate in their learning.
