Is it possible to get students to socialize in productive ways and simultaneously learn problem solving skills? Of course it is with the help of board games!
With the loss of in person class time, using board games to reconnect and give students confidence in STEM skills is needed more than ever. As a board game club advisor, I've already students who normally would be "math hesitant" learn confidence in their problem solving skills when they are successful at board games.
The Nevada High School Math Standards that apply are: 1.12.3: "Apply properties and theories of the real number system to everyday situations." As well as the Standards for Mathematical Practice of "Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them", "Reason abstractly and quantitatively", "Look for and make use of structure", and "Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning".
