When teaching English there are sometimes long stories to be read, or lengthy papers to write. Sitting in a plastic chair can make these tasks feel like it takes longer than it really does, especially when the student has an inability to focus and sit in one place for long periods of time.
Having an option to sit in a comfortable place can make the learning experience not only more enjoyable, but it can also produce a more a productive and creative student. Recently a student of mine was struggling to stay on task while working on the assignment. When I asked the student why they were off task they told me that they were uncomfortable sitting in the chair. Out of curiosity I asked the student where they would like to sit. The student said they wanted to sit on the floor. I asked the student why they would want to sit on the floor. The student informed me that they got used to sitting on the floor on a cushion during distance learning and found they work better that way. I allowed the student to sit on the floor and they were able to not only complete the assignment they had one of the most creative versions.
I have since allowed my students to find other areas in the room to sit to complete their work. Not only have my students been able to stay on task, but they are also relaxed and have shown less anxiety about being in the classroom around other people. I want to provide them with comfortable places to sit to keep this trend in my classroom.
