The materials I am requesting are to help all of my students better visualize the structure of molecules. In my Honors Chemistry and AP Chemistry classes, we will be able to better build and describe electron domains and molecular geometry using the "Old Nobby" kits I have requested. In IB chemistry, we learn Organic Chemistry concepts for a large portion of the school year. These models will help to demonstrate isomerism and stereochemistry. We could even use these models when proposing mechanisms such as nucleophilic substitution (and others) to demonstrate how bonds rearrange to form products.
I want my students to experience the wonder and imagination that Organic Chemistry has the potential to yield. The Organic Chemistry POGIL workbooks will be instrumental in helping the students understand different processes in the Higher Level IB Chemistry Curriculum. In my experience, students are intimidated by Organic Chemistry because they do not understand it. True to POGIL's form, this text will walk the students through some of the more challenging processes so by they time they are on the other side, they will be able to not only understand, but to apply their new found love for Organic Chemistry.
The other materials are general materials such as whiteboard markers and Organic Chemistry Stencils. I use the whiteboard markers for ALL kinds of formative assessment in Chemistry. They would be wonderful for practice in naming organic molecules and for writing chemical structures given the name of organic molecules. I think there is a HUGE potential to turn around the stigma associated with Organic Chemistry. Your help would certainly be an appreciated start!
