My second grade students enter class each day seeing the same desks and chairs. I hope to provide a room transformation that will allow my students alternative options for seating. Flexible seating will include wobble chairs, wobble cushions, floor seats, and balance balls that will allow students to choose their own seat daily and work in a multitude of locations throughout our classroom. Research has shown that flexible seating helps student attention spans, which will lead to increased academic achievement. Active learning is promoted, a sense of community is developed, and collaboration will occur. Students will take ownership and responsibility of "their chosen seat" to build social skills and be in charge of their own learning. Students with special needs will be ensured a place that will help them achieve their success in their optimum learning place.
I hope my students will "wobble" at school as they focus academically and build their confidence to learn in an engaging environment. Flexible seating will allow for daily movement and engagement, allowing students to choose what to sit on and where they feel their daily experiences will have the biggest impact on their learning. Students need to feel comfortable in order to be successful in the classroom. I can totally see my classroom transforming into a positive place for all learning experiences. Participating in collaborative conversations throughout the day will enable students to build their speaking and listening skills (NVACS SL.2.1), as well as all other academic standards. Students learning in their best environment will promote higher achievement in all students.
