Reading and literacy are fundamental parts of education. The books chosen will help my students see themselves in their library. This is my very first year teaching, and I didn't have many books to add to the library. The ones that were given to me are mostly fictional and don't show the realities of my students in between the pages. I think this is a very important aspect needed in libraries. All of my students are students of color. They don't have traditional lifestyles. My students come from harsh neighborhoods. Those where education isn't a priority and instead is just something to do. My kids come to me hungry, both literally and figuratively. They have the will to learn, yet their stomachs get in the way of that. They lose focus, they ask for snacks and drinks. They watch the clock for lunchtime.
My students are creative and have powerful minds. They enjoy letting themselves and their hearts on paper. They enjoy adding pictures to all of our written assignments. The colors and colored pencils will allow them to keep doing so.
