Our students have not been to our library since March of 2020, 17 months. Last year, because of COVID-19, our school library was turned into a classroom. Many of our students are lacking the necessary skills to find books and research topics. Having access to updated technology will aide me in teaching and refreshing those critical skills.
The three student computers in our library are 15+ years old. Our school district will not work on them any longer because they can't be updated to current security standards. Three very old computers in a library is not enough to teach meaningful library, research and digital citizenship skills.
Using technology to access books and research topics are fundamental skills which contribute to the mastery of many of the Nevada Academic Content Standards. A few of those standards include RI.K-5.1-6, W.K-2.6-8, RL.K-5.1-10 and W.3-5.6. In addition, for students to be college and career eeady, they must understand the fundamentals of finding and vetting information. Technology in our library is critical to helping our students achieve these goals.
