I have inherited a classroom library from a wonderful teacher who retired this year. She taught at the school for almost 20 years and the books reflect that. Some of the books are no longer appropriate and others are not relatable to a 10 year old.
My class is made up of students from around the globe but the books available are very white-centric. I chose several books that feature a black or brown protagonist. I also struggle with books to engage the boys. My 4th graders want to read fantasy and sport books, which my library has very little to offer. I also added some more modern choices for fiction along with Anne of the Green Gables because I really enjoyed that series as a girl.
