As all our students are diagnosed with autism, they have significant delays in communication, cognition, and social/pragmatic skills. They have difficulty communicating their basic wants and needs as well as interacting with peers and adults. Our students participate in a snack routine daily, that teaches students essential communication skills and daily living skills. As they engage in the snack program, they develop confidence, independence and valuable communication and life skills. However, many of the families of our students do not have the resources to send in snacks for their children. Therefore, as a classroom staff we are tasked with providing students with snacks to participate.
Participating in a snack routine will teach our students how to interact with others, dramatically improving their quality of life. During snack time, students work in groups of two to gather utensils, set the table and select a snack. They then sit facing each other and request snack items from each other. This format improves their ability to communicate with peers as well as develops their ability to interact with and respond to peers. The snacks will allow us to give all students the ability to participate in this small yet VERY meaningful and important part of the day.
Additionally, we will use these materials as reinforcers during classroom activities. Our classroom follows the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA). ABA is a method of teaching that uses external motivators to encourage students to participate in daily activities and gain skills. Through using reinforcement we are able to teach students essential skills that they will use in the future. By donating to this project you can help my students succeed and become independent members of their community!
