Ironically, while our society is more robust with consumerism than it has ever been, our students still lack ownership. Sure, they have "their" social media pages, but when they are not using those page to mimic someone else's dance moves for likes, they are scrolling through other people's perceived realities, further being reminded of how much they do not have. This lack of ownership is even more apparent in classrooms: forced curricula, little room for creativity, little to no input on what material is covered. Furthermore, students residing in rental properties right in the thick of economic deserts deal with this lack in every facet of their lives. Your gift of these materials will give my students the chance to write, design, publish, and share something they own: Their Stories. These young people have stories that often go unheard, written in conditions that often go ignored. We will not stop at just publishing, either. We will host readings and participate in events that will give my students the visibility they deserve. Their hands in the process every step of the way will ensure that they not only own something but are proud of something impactful.
