The students I support are working to increase their ability to self-regulate and access positive coping strategies. Skill development in these domains is crucial. They directly impact a students ability to access the curriculum, maintain healthy connections and become functioning members of society. Students with emotional disabilities require additional tools to increase or support their ability to process social or academic situations and to share them effectively with a trusted adult. The rocks, water beads and figurines are to make sensory bins. Sensory bins are very calming to those with sensory processing disorders. They also act as an avenue of communication during play therapy. Crafting supplies contribute to multimodal learning. Students make connections to the lessons presented through art. The bluetooth speaker and light has two benefits! Students can access music and colored lights as a calming tool AND better hear lessons delivered through technology! Games are a wonderful way to teach social and emotional skills. Students remain engaged and are more invested in the concepts presented Games also create additional "natural" opportunities for students to practice the skills they are working to build. These are more than just items to my students, they are the difference between SUCCESS and a missed learning opportunity.
