Since my students come from diverse cultural backgrounds鈥攊ncluding ethnicity, language, social status, economic status, and challenges faced鈥擨 would like to add more books to my classroom library to reach as many students as possible. Students want to read more when they see mirrors of themselves in books. They need to be exposed to the cultural backgrounds of others to develop empathy for others and become productive members of a community. Some of these will be read-aloud texts that the whole class will read and discuss together, making connections on shared experiences despite diversity. Others will be read by the students independently鈥攄uring which they can spend as much time with the books and characters as they would like. Students will develop a greater interest in reading, strong connections to the class, and an increased desire to learn.
