I am requesting a puppet theater, puppets, fidget toys and dollhouse for their developmentally appropriate purposeful play centers.
Purposeful Play allows students to take charge of their learning and creates play-based learning in the classroom. During these purposeful play times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them and have a variety of choices within each of four play-based learning areas- construction, dramatic play, sensory, and creative play (arts and crafts). I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given choice and freedom in exploring each area of purposeful play. They almost always make good choices about how they interact, are more engaged, and gain confidence in working through problems together than when they are just sitting at their desk.
My students are noticeably more engaged and less disruptive of their peers when they are concentrating on solving a construction problem, or using their imagination and creativity during dramatic or creative play centers.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional purposeful play options to give them more of a variety of choices. The puppets and theater will be used in the dramatic play center. This is very good for students to act out problems together, practice reading scripts, or use their imagination to create their own stories. The dollhouse and accessories will be an additional choice in this center area, and will be extremely beneficial for some students to work on social and communication skills.
The baskets will help students keep all the items organize
that go with each center.
I have seen how choices in purposeful play can positively affect my students’ cooperation, critical thinking, and social skills. I hope that the additional options will help us grow even more as we learn through play!
