Many of these books are going to be used to help support and supplement student learning in multiple domains of science according to the 5th grade NGSS Standards. These non-fiction titles are going to be used as texts for read out louds and small groups to help deepen student understanding of various content in science. Having these books for students to read during their free time can help students gain more background knowledge about the science standards they will learn about throughout the school year.
Having a variety of texts gives students choice in what materials they can use to help them learn. My choices of fiction books are also going to allow my classroom library to grow, and they are also meant to represent diversity through characters and people who come from different cultural backgrounds. I believe this is important so students can not only see themselves represented in stories, but they can also learn about others who come from different races and cultures.
