Many of the books in my classroom library do not represent the student population I serve. My goal for this project is to provide my students with a classroom library that will reflect their different identities. Each of the hand selected story books will help communicate the lived experiences of the diverse group of students in my classroom and the experiences of individuals that are not represented in our classroom. In a time where there is an overwhelming amount of division and hatred in the world now more than ever, my purpose as an educator is to ensure that the future generation of students are able to enthusiastically celebrate and embrace diversity.
I want my classroom to be a culturally diverse space where students feel comfortable and more importantly accepted while sharing their backgrounds and exploring different identities. I believe that the best way this can be achieved in my classroom is through the various story books on my list! Our classroom community would also greatly appreciate a printer to assist in furthering their learning. Unfortunately, my school only has two copy machines that do not function to the best of their ability. Those two printers are shared with over 60 other educators and staff members.
Both myself and my eager 1st graders want to thank you for your generous donations! Your contributions are helping provide voices to vulnerable communities that have been voiceless for far too long!
