These materials will be used to create a calming corner in the school counselor's office where students can come to calm down when they are stressed, angry, or anxious. The furry rug, pillows, and sea salt lamp will create a calming, nurturing space, while also serving as sensory tools to help students de-stress and feel safe. The coloring books and fidget toys will be used as calming and self-regulation tools. The posters will create a healthy, positive, uplifting environment so students know they have value and they matter. Through access to the calming corner materials, students will develop skills including self-awareness, self-regulation, stress and anger management, and emotion identification and expression. In these challenging times when rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide are high, a focus on mental health is critical. The calming corner will provide our students with a safe, supportive place to de-stress, self-soothe, talk about what's going on for them, and learn skills to take care of themselves and their emotions in a healthy way so that they can become healthy, functional adults.
