Junior high students will learn to improve their reading skills, practice critical thinking, share their own cultural background, increase vocabulary, and learn about other ways of life and cultures. With these books, they will learn and improve comprehension strategies and decoding skills. Expository, sensory, and argumentative writing will revolve around the reading of these award-winning and relevant texts: Ghost and Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, and
Rising Voices, written by teen Native-Americans.
Students will participate in dynamic small group projects based on the texts and share them with their greater school community. Students will enjoy getting to know their classmates and peers better, broadening their reading experiences, and sharing their new knowledge with others.
