My First Grades have been reading and learning about the Iditarod. I would like each student to be able to adopt a husky and use it for several learning activities for the month of March. One project I would like the students to do would be to design a dog house at home with the help of their parents for their stuffed dog. These will be displayed at the local science fair. We will be learning about caring for dogs as well as have a food drive for a local shelter. The students will get to name their dog and make a collar and booties for their dog to wear. They will also use the dog as a reading buddy and log their minutes each night. They will get to move their husky along a map in the hallway for each book that they read. 26 books and they reach Nome. When the actual race begins we will pick a musher to follow along the race with. The stuffed huskies will make our learning come alive and will be a nice keepsake for the students.
