My students are required to journal for the first 10 minutes of class. The students will use the journals to record their feelings, thoughts, and experiences every day before the start of class. One requirement is that they write one positive thing that is happening in their life at the moment.
This strategy of having the students record something good and positive in their life allows them the opportunity to reflect and understand that even though life may be difficult at the moment, something good is always happening. It can be something as simple as the sun is shinning to being able to sit next to someone they like.
Too often students only can see the negative and they forget the positives that are consistently available for them. The journaling encourages them to stop and take note of something good and beautiful that is happening in their environment.
