Make a donation Mrs. Papuga can use on her next classroom project.
Each student will have a copy of the book Letters to A Young Athlete by Chris Bosh. We will discuss this book in a risk-free environment during the school day using positive feedback to help the student athletes feel successful about their reading. This feeling of achievement will lead to a desire for additional reading opportunities which will increase self-motivation and confidence. 60% of the students in the program will increase their scores on a teacher generated Pre/Post assessment during the second semester.
By donating to our project, you will help to improve basic reading skills, motivation, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. This in turn will help to increase student achievement and raise FSA reading scores.
The students will discover a connection between athletics and academics by being engaged in this book and will become stronger, more confident readers. By reading and discussing this book we hope to answer the question, "How can a person's decisions and actions change his/her life?"
The standards that are being addressed are ELA.9.R.1.2: "Analyze universal themes and their development throughout a literary text." and LAFS.910.RI.1.2: "Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text."
Detailed lesson plans will be available upon request.
