Imagine being a young student who is still learning to interact with others and their environments. It's a typical morning but things are still not going your way. You've woken up late, argued with your sibling, only ate part of your breakfast, the bus was too noisy, plus your shirt is itchy and not even your favorite color. You get to school, already on edge, and it's time to sit down and start learning to read and write, the last thing on your mind.
Now imagine, with the help of our project, you walk into a calm classroom, that smells like lavender, sit down on your squishy wobble seat (which cancels out the itchy tag), pull out your favorite fidget (which takes your mind off of everything else), and your teacher begins quietly reading a story that describes exactly how you feel. WOW, the character in the story is exactly like YOU. You're not alone and not the only person that feels this way. Then she provides you with the tools to change that feeling into a calm and ready-to-learn feeling. Your class all gets out their new emotions journals, you write down your old feeling, cross it out, and write down your new feeling. Now you're ready to restart the day and learn at school.
