The classroom library is one of the prime motivating factors in encouraging students to pick up books and actually read them. When my students enter my classroom, they are surrounded by a variety of books at all times - mystery, non-fiction, graphic novels, historical fiction, etc. Students know immediately that I value reading very highly by the amount of space I give to books. Then, when I explain my classroom routines, they also understand that they will have time to read and explore all of the titles in my classroom library.
I want students to understand that in my classroom, they have the time and freedom to explore topics and stories that they are interested in and that reflect their experiences in the world. I frequent used book stores and Good Will shops often. 95% of my current classroom library has been purchased by me. However, because I can get a few older books for the price of one new book, I do not always have the latest titles or the nicest copies of titles. I would love to start this school year off with some fresh titles and beautiful copies to hit the ground running with independent reading.
