My name is Kelsey, and I am a new high school Special Education Teacher in Colorado! My co-teacher Lindsey and I have BIG plans for our class of 30! Our class is set up to teach functional skills- think life skills like cooking, job experience, money math, reading directions, safety, communication, etc. We want our classroom to reflect experiences that our students will see when they enter life after high school. To do this, we are looking to expand our classroom supplies to best support their needs. The visuals and games on our Amazon list offer students new ways to explore these new skills.
We added a few specific items that will really improve our classroom. First, the bean bag chair will offer alternate seating for students in wheelchairs and those with sensory impairments who need a soft quiet place to calm down. We asked for 10 copies of the book Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper to start a book study with the para professionals in our classroom. This book is written from a perspective of a child with a disability who is not treated with respect and still overcomes obstacles. The math games and visuals will be used in my Life Skills Math class to practice and keep math skills sharp! Finally, some of the office supplies like the shredder and label maker will be incorporated in our Transitions Job program.
