A calm down corner is a safe place meant to help children recognize how they feel, say how they feel and then choose a positive choice. Process: I'll select an out-of-the way area in the classroom to create the Corner. 2. I'll furnish the space with a soft rug, beanbag chairs, floor cushions and/or large pillows, a relaxation CD and player, headphones, books and magazines, etc. 3. I'll set up the partitions to provide enough privacy for the student while still allowing visibility by the teacher. 4. I'll post a set of visual calming strategies in the area to provide self-managing reminders for the student. 5. I'll talk with the students and explain how and when to use the area. 6. I'll let them know that they're allowed to go to this area at the first sign of becoming upset. 7. I'll set the visual timer for the agreed upon amount of time. 8. When the time is up, I'll prompt the student for returning to his work area. This reinforcement may help the student repeat this desired behavior in the future.
