The impact of Covid-19 and school closures can clearly be seen in our students on a daily basis. More than three fourths of our student population were out of our school building for 17 months and in that time lacked engagement with peers. The lack of engagement with peers slowly eroded the social emotional training that has already been built up in children through the consistent education system.
The combination of the Virtual Reality and the Social Emotional Learning books that I have requested in this project will allow students the opportunity to refocus their minds and thoughts in a way that will help them properly address social anxiety and confrontations so that they can have appropriate relationships with their peers and lessen the stresses that they may be experiencing.
The additional teaching materials such as picture books and student workbooks will help to introduce and reinforce various social emotional skills needed to acquire the following ASCA National Model Mindset and Behavior Standards and many more
M 1. Belief in development of whole self, including a healthy balance of mental, social/emotional and physical well-being
M 2. Sense of acceptance, respect, support and inclusion for self and others in the school environment
B-LS 2. Creative approach to learning,
tasks and problem solving
l B-SS 2. Positive, respectful and supportive
relationships with students who are
similar to and different from them
Recent Lifeline survey data indicated a consistent decline from Spring 2021 to Fall 2021 in the areas of Emotion Regulation, Challenging Feelings and Positive Feelings. I am eager to see an increase in these in future survey data as a result of using these items that I am soliciting assistance for.
