My students love flexibility in our daily learning. Whether this means being able to use a whiteboard instead of paper, a pillow instead of a chair, or markers instead of pencils, they glow in the fact that they have the ability to choose in our class. These materials will give them a chance to make their learning opportunities (and learning environment) what they need it to be.
It will help make my classroom a meaningful place for my students to learn, not just a place for me to teach, and put a focus on my students' learning, rather than my teaching.
A goal I have for my students is for them to become more engaged in number talks. We will use the individual white boards and rug while we do our number talks every day as a part of our math block. The goal they have is to be able to use mental math to solve multi digit addition and subtraction problems, and then share the strategy they used mentally. It will be so cool to see them put their strategies into action on the whiteboards during small group instruction on our rug!
