Having a gathering space for lessons is essential in 2nd grade. In this space, we are able to explore, discover, and learn from one another. We learn about phonics, reading fluency, comprehension, writing, and math concepts on a classroom rug. A classroom easel is also a must in this learning space, as it would be used to chart students' ideas, create anchor charts, and model across all subjects.
Not only does this area provide my students with the opportunity to easily share thoughts and ideas with their peers, but it also serves as an excellent tool for focus and engagement. Movement between activities serves as an excellent brain break and prepares students for learning during mini-lessons. A classroom carpet and easel give students a voice. When students are able to share their ideas and know their input is valuable, it fosters a community that welcomes risk-taking and learning.
