Boomwhackers are nontraditional musical instruments made of plastic tubes that have been cut to create a particular pitch. The smaller the rube is, the higher the pitch will be, and the larger it is, the lower the pitch will be. That in itself is a lesson that the students will learn very quickly. We have quite a few unpitched percussion instruments in the classroom (claves and rhythm sticks, for example), but we do not really have any pitched percussion that are widely usable.
Students will be able to practice as an ensemble, being responsible for the sound they are putting together. Boomwhackers can withstand being played with a difficult hand, but students will learn that the best sound that they can make will be when they are playing gently. They will also get the experience of experimenting to find how they can play to get the best timbre.
