Our 4th and 5th grade English/ Language Arts/ Social Studies class is a flexible learning space, where kids will complete work on the computer, get individualized assignments and feedback, and have more choices in how they learn. We have laptops for all of our students, and I have been hard at work figuring out how to make our curriculum flexible and responsive to children's needs. The last piece of the puzzle is creating a classroom space that offers choice and responds to students' needs. Research has demonstrated that all people, students, and adults are happier and more productive when they can move around and be comfortable. So, in the spirit of personalized learning, we want to offer the children various seating options, saucer chairs, beanbags, support pillows, fidget cushions, and a learning space that offers more than a standard desk and chair.
