As a new teacher who came into the classroom during COVID, I have so few resources that I am able to share with my students this year. My students longed to read independent choice novels this year in addition to the class texts I assigned, but COVID restrictions prevented us from allowing them to borrow materials from the library. My students were disappointed that I did not have a robust classroom library that they could borrow from freely. One of my students, noticing my decided lack of reading material, donated his favorite book to my classroom library to get it started.
My students deserve books that reflect their identities and experiences. It is my hope that I can use these titles to begin to build a multicultural classroom library with contemporary titles that will entice even the most reluctant reader to fall in love with a book. While studies show that by the time students reach high school they lose their passion for reading for pleasure, it is my hope that getting engaging books, such as these titles, into their hands will help students rediscover their lost love of reading.
