First Grade students learn best when they are actively involved in their learning! I have found students love to try and solve problems by building and designing solutions. Students work best together when they are "doing" rather than just listening.
Using blocks, designing marble runs, creating Lego structures and developing solutions to a problem using magnets and flashlights provide opportunities for this type of hands-on learning! Having these materials in our classroom would provide students with ongoing opportunities to show what they know by building and explaining rather than just listening and writing!
