At Northern Lights ABC School, students in my 3rd grade class will enjoy the new experience of growing plants and herbs in the classroom without using soil. This type of growing system will introduce students to a whole new way of growing plants which we study as part of our curriculum.
Living in Alaska, we often lack the sunlight and warmth outside during the school year to sustain growth of certain vegetables and herbs. Children may not be exposed to eating fresh produce and just observe what is offered at the store. It gives children the opportunity to grow their own produce by farming and inspires children to be more excited about eating what they have produced themselves.
My students will be completing hands-on lessons as well as studying parts of seeds and plants in the growing process. Students will record data on the growth of their plants related to the hydroponic system and complete at least one grow / harvest cycle during the school year. They will learn about seed growth and nutrients to support healthy growing. Students will also learn how important light is to the growth of plants, as well as specific details about eating fresh food by farming.
The hydroponic growing system we choose will be used to excite and inspire future gardeners. Children will learn how seeds grow into sustainable plants that provide the same nutritional value as those grown in soil. Students will also be learning about the sustainable energy and space needed to grow healthy plants with no soil. Growing fresh food in the classroom will be one of the most exciting indoor farming projects for my students!
