As a teacher returning to the classroom, I once had a class library full of books with diverse characters where my students could connect. When I left the classroom, I allowed my students to take home my library because I wanted them to have access to books at home, continue to read, and share the books. My students still continue to connect with me and tell me about what they are reading. We have formed online book clubs this year to discuss what we are reading and most often, my former students are reading the books from my library.
As I continue my journey back into the classroom, I want my library to be full of books where my students see themselves in the characters. I value my students and want them to be able to make connections to the book. Because I gave my library to my former students, I am entering the classroom without a class library. By giving students a library rich with diversity, I will provide them a way to find joy in what they read by identifying with characters.
