Due to the COVID school closures and having many students without access to books at home, we have seen significantly lower reading abilities this year. In some grade levels over seventy-five percent of students are reading below grade level. We are already providing many reading interventions to students and feel that one piece we are still missing is engaging phonetic text for students to read independently.
This will help struggling readers feel proud to read a chapter book like their peers! Many of the books we are hoping to order are chapter books that are at much lower reading levels than usual chapter books. We feel that adding more decodable (phonics patterned) books at low levels in each classroom will help kids practice and reinforce the skills we are teaching them, while also building their confidence.
