I am a resource teacher that works with children who have difficulty mastering their grade level skills. Many of their academic issues are compounded by their lack of self esteem and motivation. In researching ways to support these struggling learners, helping build self-efficacy and self worth has been key. I would like to create a project based unit, building a succulent garden, that incorporates reading, math, science and social-emotional lessons. My hope is that each student would create a mini succulent garden. By doing so, I hope they will build self pride by creating something beautiful, gain responsibility by taking care of something, in addition to gaining academic skills via the steps to create the garden. Students will be required to research, plan & execute a design to build their succulent garden, reflect and set two goals (which they will paint and decorate on the outside of the pot), and then care for the plant. At the end of the quarter, they will take their plant home as a gift to their family.
