I have had the opportunity to sample this particular calculator through a special offer. While the school does have graphing calculators for our students to use, they were purchased before I was hired which was almost 13 years ago. I would say the graphing calculators are at least 15 years old and extremely outdated. Since that school purchase, graphing calculators have made leaps and bound forward in terms of accessibility and features!
These new and updated calculators will allow students from our rural community to compete academically with their peers from better funded school districts. I was able to purchase some basic calculators for my students that are enrolled in my Pre-Algebra through Geometry classes. I am still in need for my Algebra 2 and up students. These calculators have been designed with today's students in mind. They are designed to work like applications on their cell phones. This makes them more likely to learn the ends and outs of their program faster. The current graphing calculators are not designed in a user friendly way, so most students do not use them to their full capacity while in class.
I have a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Mathematics and a master鈥檚 degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I take pride in education for my students and myself. I feel my job as a teacher is to prepare my students either for a future job after they graduate or to continue their education at a college or university. These calculators will allow me to better bridge the gap from the classroom and life after high school. These calculators could also allow me to give real-life applications of the material that we cover in my upper-level courses. This would allow the material to come to life for them through different STEM careers.
