At our school we believe it is important to cultivate and encourage an excitement for reading. One way we cultivate this excitement for students in 2nd-5th grade is through reading quizzes and goal setting. Students are encouraged to read books and take quizzes on them. They receive points for demonstrating that they remember what they read. Teachers collaborate with students to set the goals for the students. In the library we have a Wall of Fame, where students' pictures are displayed to show how many points they have earned throughout the year. One of our community members also sponser a gift giveaway at the end of the year for those students in 3rd-5th grade who have earned points throughout the year. All of these activities have helped to cultivate an excitement for reading in our elementary students.
Our goal is to see all of our students realize the excitement of reading! With this grant we would purchase incentive awards for students to spend their reading points on. Currently only students in 2nd-5th grade earn reading points. We would like to expand the reading points program to include students in 6th-8th grade. The majority of awards would be for 2nd-5th grade students. With a small portion of awards for upper-level readers to purchase with their reading points.
