Students have the potential to be the authors of their own lives--if given the opportunity to try. A vast majority of my students come from groups that are underrepresented in popular literature. In addition to old and outdated books in our library, even I can understand a lack of interest in reading. However, by carefully selecting engaging, diverse, and representative works of literature, I believe my students will have the opportunity to see themselves as the heroes, experience new worlds, and feel seen and valued as individuals. After nearly an entire year of virtual learning due to the pandemic, now more than ever, we must engage with our students and continue to build their literacy and fluency skills.
Through this project, I aim to transform lives with the power of words. By showing students the diversity of the world, I believe they will discover more about themselves and find the courage to tell their own stories.
