My students will be able to use these books as the basis of their literature circles and/or book talks for in-class assignments and activities. My goal is to create lifelong readers and to inspire them to connect to the characters and their stories. My hope is to help my students find at least one great book that they find relevant to the world that they live in, or that they would like to create for themselves.
The addition of these books will change the way my students are able to interact with literature by giving them books to read that they can actually relate to! While we do appreciate the classics and will continue to use them in our curriculum, my students deserve to read and absorb the beautiful words of our modern writers. Authors such as John Green, and Sherman Alexie offer creative insights into the diverse lives and minds of our teenagers.
