Our school is requesting resources to support the creation of our school鈥檚 literary makerspace in our Library Media Center. These funds would be used to turn a portion of our traditional library into a more well-rounded media center with resources for students to code, create video productions, upcycle and build architectural designs, and engineer machines using math, science, and art. We would like the opportunity for all students to be able to access a literary makerspace center, not just students who sign up for electives. We would like to instill a passion for learning and independent thinking for students when they visit the makerspace.
The library literary makerspace will support our school's mission by challenging students to become problem solvers, innovators, and use critical thinking skills beyond their basic studies so that all of our students can discover their full potential and become the best version of themselves. Students will be able to read a novel, at home and at school and then integrate their reading into a STEAM based activity. For example, after reading the book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, students will use Snap Circuits and Renewable Energy Legos to create their own wind-powered machine. Another example, after reading Number the Stars students will learn through inquiry problem solving by building their version of a water delivery system like the characters in the novel had to do.
Our goal for all students is that they will be able to take what they have learned in our library literary makerspace and use this knowledge for innovations and inventions that are yet to come.
