I am the percussion specialist for our district, meaning that I have many of my students in my classes for several years while they are involved with our instrumental music programs. In conjunction with our instrumental music program, percussion students are involved with marching, concert, and jazz bands in addition to participating in chamber percussion ensembles, and solo performances.
When school closures began amid rising COVID-19 concerns, my students lost access to the school, and thus lost access to the school-owned percussion instruments (marimbas, xylophones, bass drums, timpani, and many more) for practice and learning activities. As the pandemic continues on, with student safety at the forefront, we have nearly eliminated any sharing of mallets, which limits the sonic possibilities of the ensemble.
These new mallets would allow us to once again make decisions based on the musical context. The additional mallets would also replace mallets that have been degraded due to repeated sanitization practices over the last 2 years.
