Students in general look for one way to solve a problem. When we use manipulatives, we can explore the various routes to arrive at the same solution. If a problems involves fractional parts of a whole, students can explore 1/8, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4/etc as part of the whole. When we explore how a $1 can equal 100 pennies, 10 dimes, 4 quarters and 20 nickels. A teacher can also create higher order thinking questions that require multiple steps. Teachers can also add these denominations using a part of each denomination.
