Imagine, or perhaps remember, you are suddenly placed in a different culture. You are expected to follow the unfamiliar cultural norms and expectations. Communication is a constant battle. What do you say? How do you say it? What is expected? How do you survive? All English as a Second Language students face these very frustrations every day they walk into a classroom. My job as their English teacher is to assist in alleviating these concerns, while helping them build confidence in their language acquisition skills. However, they not only struggle in my class but also in their content level courses. Can you imagine trying to learn about Edo period Japan in Japanese when your primary language is different? How about the Chinese methodology in mathematics? It is no small task. My request for these dictionaries is to provide my students a resource they can take with them to ALL their classes. Within its pages contain vocabulary and images for various points of American history, advanced mathematics, biology and general English words, to name a few of the sections. In addition, the dictionaries have sentence writing activities to help them use the dictionaries to stretch their use of new vocabulary. The teacher's edition comes with instruction for all levels of English as a Second Language students. The variety of activities in the teacher's edition helps students make connections with language and content. By helping my students obtain these dictionaries, you will also be helping their various content area teachers. Ultimately, the goal is to encourage my students to build life-altering, lifelong loves of learning, and to open gateways with these dictionaries, which will help achieve that goal by giving them the extra support they deserve, not only in English, but in learning itself.
