Many of my students have Autism Spectrum Disorder and struggle to self-regulate and calm themselves when they are upset, overwhelmed, or overstimulated. Each student benefits from occupational therapy services and in their sessions, they engage in sensory exploration activities to determine what strategies are helpful for them in order to calm and participate in classroom activities, lunch, or transitions. When students are given access to these beneficial sensory materials, their ability to self-regulate and calm is significantly improved, resulting in them being more successful in school activities. By giving my students access to a sensory room with different calming tools, they will learn how to effectively use sensory strategies such as bouncing on a ball, focusing on a calming light, or engaging in tactile play with sensory discs in order to become calmer and refocused not only at school but also at home and in community settings. Donations to this project will help to establish a small sensory room in a rural school to help students who truly benefit from sensory tools in order to be more independent, successful students at school each day.
