There is a staggering amount of students showing interest in Manga and Graphic novels at our high school. Since we are a rural school, Manga and graphic novels would offer exposure to a new form of media from a different culture.
These texts level the playing field in regard to reading amongst high school students by giving struggling readers a chance to develop reading skills and a starting point for voicing their thoughts and opinions on popular leisure and academic texts.
I've had so many students request "The Last Air Bender: The Rift" because and it's hard to find. Uzumaki offers different artwork and storylines that pull-in reluctant readers as its structure is primarily Junji Ito artwork.
My "Hero Academia" is a highly popular and in-demand series that is constantly requested. These texts spur students into broadening their horizons and looking at other cultures. These texts are easy to read so they appeal to both avid and novice readers.
While mangas may have a different structure, they still provide all of the important elements of classic novels that lead people to love them. So, titles such as "The Hobbit" and "Macbeth" allow for struggle readers to lead and voice discussion among peers both in and out of the classrooms.
Within the last year, stickers have taken over in popularity. The stickers are rewards for students who turn books in on time and for those who read multiple books in a month. They will also be rewards for reluctant readers who finish their first book from these texts.
