Flexible/Alternative seating helps meet the needs of my students because it allows them to fidget or get a change in their setting while they are learning. When students are uncomfortable they tend to be more distracted, because they are more focused on their comfort level. Providing students with comfortable seating options that meet their need enables them to focus and be more productive in the classroom setting.
In addition to making the students more comfortable flexible seating helps my students with sensory needs. Having chairs that look like yoga balls, stools that wobble, and desk that they can stand at, help meet their sensory needs. This helps my students process information and focus during instruction. This sensory input is especially helpful for students with Attentive Deficit Disorder, Hyper Activity Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
